Hi everyone and welcome to my first challenge. I have tried to pick a variety of pictures to encourage everyone to have a go. All medium/medias are accepted. The pictures are: 1) A fantastic landscape from morguefile.com, which is a totally copyright free site with a wealth of reference pictures on it. 2) Another great landscape from the wetcanvas image library. I love this photo as it already has a painterly feel about it. 3) A picture of me in the stocks taken at the Fremantle Round House in Western Australia. This was the original jail when the town was first colonized and the prisoners were expected to build roads, buildings and tunnels. They could be put in the stocks just for being rude! If they were very bad they nailed their ears to the stock too so they couldn't move whilst the public threw excrement and rotten food at them! Anyway, I thought it was about time I let you see what I look like! 4) A cute picture of a koala; I am in Australia after all! 5) A sea turtle, we get them up the coast too. 6) A still life from the wetcanvas reference library. 7) Some pretty flowers. Let me know if you want any of them in black and white and have fun!

Wonderful pictures, Andrea!!! Especially for me laaaaaaaaandscapes!!!! Aaaahaaahaaand - you have chosen two of my very favorite animals (I only have about 75424 ;D) - I wanted to try a sea turtle for a very long time and also a Koala. But never found good ref pics. Can someone please put away the huge plank off of my forehead? Means I am a blockhead! I haven't read that this is you, Andrea. I thought it is a very poor soul who was so hungry that she had to steal the soup of the king and was caught while stealing this sparse meal. ;D Rose is right - you are a very sweet and sympathical looking hungry poor soul !

Ooopsy - I am the first who has finished one? Unbelievable! ;D OK - here is my koala (the photo is a bit flat): ~ 20 x 11 cm (what is it in " ?) Sanford's Ebony pencil on a very old and yellowish drawing paper - I once bought it at ebay together with phantastic paper. Because I thought that I can't do a koala I used the not-so-good paper. Next time I have to be more brave I think.

Great photos, Andrea, thank you! & I agree that you're a real cutie-patootie!
Good job on that koala, Martina - that'll teach you to use good paper! lol seriously, it seems that every time I do a "practice" piece on junky paper it comes out better than something I painted on the good stuff! So, just start doing everything on good paper to begin with!

WoW great job on the koala Martina! Andrea - usually we have a new challenge on the 1st and the 15th of the month so technically there will be a new challenge on the 15th. However, the thread would still be here and as in all cases everyone is welcome to post their work even if it's not finished within the agreed time.... and I'm sure a lot of people will try their hand at your fabulous references.

I started on the koala and ended up trashing it .I started in graphite and then overlayed with some ink that I bought this weekend with a nib and stylus ( I'm fascinated by it and it was looking really good until I erased the pencil and I noticed that his/her eyes looked pretty much like Marty Feldman( for those of you who remember who he was ) so it was an interesting experiment one that I will continue I did bathe today

Great job on the koala Martina, shame about the paper. His nose and eyes and fur look fantastic. Keep persevering Tim, that reminds me I haven't tried pen & ink since school, its a very brave media to try. LOL..I didn't think you where here seeing that musty 'joint like' aroma wasn't around! Peace man!
Eeek, I'd better get working on one myself if we 'officially' only have a week left. I should finish my recycling piece today so will start after that. LOL! I'm not sure which one to pick though! Decisions decisions! ....I have some burgundy sanded paper (Art Spectrum Colourfix, I think); you can use CPs on sanded paper, can't you or is it better suited to pastels?

Thanks for the comment on my Koala - I am totally proud of it because this definitively is the second animal that looks real. Tim, go on with your Koala - I am sure it will be good at least. I too thought about adding some ink to make the darks darker And I think it would have been good but I didn't. Show us "the mess" - I am sure you are too strong to yourself. Andrea, I wouldn't use sanded paper for CPs - this paper eats the pencils up like nothing else. Pastel paper works mostly great with CPs. It is hungry enough on CPs, but sanded paper - uiuiui... I tried it one time and made this experience and I also read about it at WetC. .

Andrea, I've used a small piece of ColourFix as an experiment & I liked it but it does eat pencils. If I were going to use it again, I think I'd use the watercolor pencils/crayons for the first layer to help fill in the color so you don't have to use so much cp.
I think you should try it in a small size just so you'll know if it's for you. It's the old different strokes for different folks thing - what works for me may not suit you at all.
My dear Tim! You're way too hard on yourself! Please show us your experiment - that's what these challenges are for, you know! You're supposed to be challenged! lol

I would imagine that sanded paper like Art Spectrum would really eat up your pencils... but why not try an experiment like I did for pastels - using the finest grade of industrial sand paper! It proved marvelous for pastels - it might work also for CP's. I don't know about longevity but worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestions and advise everyone. I think I'll try my hand at my first ever landscape first then perhaps I'll give the art spectrum a go....I've got some more CPs coming so can afford to waste a few on the sanded paper!!! I'm still tossing up what medium to use on the landscape, pastels or CP. Isn't it weird how nervous you get; doing a landscape shouldn't be any different than doing a still life really but I'm shaking in my boots!

Well I'm halfway through doing my first ever landscape and it is the hardest picture I've ever done! Whose silly reference pictures where these? .......Oh yes they were mine! Doh! There are so many shades of greens and blues. Aaaaahhhh! Anyway, I have total respect for all you landscape artists, it isn't easy.
