Ugh! This one's a toughy Nair. I could venture to say Elizabeth Thompson, known by her married name of Lady Butler but apparently she only (or mostly) painted military scenes.

OK Nair - I'm giving this one more try and then I'm giving up.
Is it Dame Laura Alma-Tadema? ... she was a sort of neo classical painter.

You're correct...ufa... The painting is called "A knock at the door", 1897. She's an amazing painter and shares the same way of painting with her husband. Just brilliant... here adults say: "When i grow up..." when they are jealous (in a good way) and really admire someone... so when i grow up i want to paint just like her" 2 karmas coming up for Rose Nair

No Nair - if anything I think I deserve only one Karma point since I did not guess the name of the painting. Although I'd heard of her before I was not very familiar with Alma-Tadema's works. Now that I have looked closely at them I tend to agree with you Nair. This little quiz is a great opportunity to look at works we have not looked up before though. I think we should make more use of it and start adding some info about the artists we come across here in our History of Art Library. So now I suppose it is my turn again. This one should be relatively easy. Here goes:

How do you all go about finding the name & artist for these somewhat obscure paintings? I kinda, sorta recognize the style of this one but have never had any real art history so have no idea of where to begin to look.

Georges-Pierre Seurat painted the "Bathers, Asnières", 1883-4 (I had three years of Art History)

Correct Nair! Two points of karma and over to you again!
Jan - I only arrived at the previous one because of the clues Nair gave us.
Tim - I found this blurb about the painting which you might find interesting: While the painting was not executed using Seurat's pointillist technique, which he had not yet invented, the artist later reworked areas of this picture using dots of contrasting colour to create a vibrant, luminous effect. For example, dots of orange and blue were added to the boy's hat.

Good job Grampy. Rivera and Kahlo were the first painters to come to my mind too but like you I couldn't trace the painting on the net.

Good job Mitamy. Albert Bierstadt was one of the original "Hudson River" painters who is known for his panoramic landscape scenes and dramatic colors.

Muito bem Ema. De facto tenho que pesquisar mais sobre os pintores americanos,na história de Arte damos alguns, mas muito poucos.... nunca ouvi falar deste pintor.
Well done Ema. I have to research more about the american painters, in art History we talked about some, but few...i've never heard of this one. But it's beautiful. Nair
