This a progression of a watercolor of a Japanese Magnolia that I have on my blog & thought I'd share here. Sometimes I don't think I'll ever get watercolor right! I was trying to use the technique of Susan Harrison-Tustain which involves a yellow underpainting to give a watercolor a "glow". I'm not sure this piece glows; I think it looks more antique or something. I really think this is a technique that benefits some subjects more than others. Also, I got an email from a watercolor friend who advised me to go even darker with the background (I thought I was finished with version 2!) She said I could go darker overall or just darken portions & I wish I had just darkened some parts of it. I think this is when PhotoShop or other photo editing software is a true benefit to artists & I should have taken advantage of mine! So, does it glow or just look yellow? lol

It glows!!! If you would tell us, that you have put a light behind your painting, I would believe it. Really good painting. I like it very much.

This is very nice. I am jealous. I have a photo of that type of magnolia but I am afraid to try it. Your work is always very nice.
Beautiful

Personally I too would have thought it was done in the second version Jan - it already glowed and did so in a very delicate sort of way which is so fantastic about watercolours.
The end result is still very beautiful but I don't think the darker background really added more than you had already achieved in version 2.
But the glow is certainly there Jan. Lovely work!

I agree with everyone else you certainly achieved a beautiful glow. I prefer the background on the second one but it is still great.

It really does glow I also prefer the second one but I can't offer any technical info as to why .Certainly the third one is great as well but I think the second glows more

Thanks everyone.
Laura, painting flowers is just like painting any other subject - you have to be inspired to paint it to begin with then you just have to practice. You don't know how many paintings I file in the circular file!
Rose, Andrea & Tim, I wish I had stopped with 2 also. Now the background looks "dead" & I don't think there's anything I can do about it. Actually, it might have worked with #1 if I'd really deepened the colors of the magnolia and left the background lighter.
Live and learn! And your comments do help me learn so continue commenting honestly.
