Here is what I have been working on in the past couple of days. It's based on a demo by painter Lorraine Vatcher. This was a big challenge for me, technically, artistically and mentally. To start with I did not find the windsor blue which Vatcher uses extensively in the painting so I had to rely instead on cobalt blue which was not giving me the same effect. Secondly this is not my usual style. As I remarked on another thread the background (done first and then the foreground painted over it - again not what i usually do) is almost abstract in nature. And then there was the subject matter itself. I don't think I have ever seen a spruce tree in real life, much less snow on it and even much less icicles hanging from it's branches! As a painting it seems to work though. I'm calling it Night Lights: What do you think - shall I spray it?

I'm loving this picture. Amazing that you have never seen a spruce tree or snow on one. But that just shows what an artist you really are! Great painting!

The transparency of the icicles looks really good and would have looked good even without the twinkle in them. Also, the background really makes the color stand out. Nice one.
I have a half dead spruce in my front yard, but mine doesn't have the red seeds on it.

Thank you all for your lovely comments. I really enjoyed this one and not only because it was the first decent thing I've done for weeks. I wrote to the Canadian artist Lorraine Vatcher since in her demo she requested images of any work done following it. She turned out to be an extremely nice person who responded to me immediately. I was rather pleased that she said she was proud of what I had done. Now that was nice!

Well, Rose, what did you expect? This is pretty phenonomal since you've never seen a spruce or snow or worked like this before! Well done!

Thanks everyone... it really is good to be doing something decent again. And I must say I did learn a lot from this painting.
