I know this challenge isn't supposed to start until tomorrow but I'm having to make hay while the sun shines so to speak. Our cell phone/internet provider is doing some major maintenance that's supposed to last for several days & I'm only able to access the internet on a sporadic basis. This is one of them! Here are 6 challenge photos all taken by me and free to use as you wish with the exception of the photo of my grandson. Please confine the use of this photo as only for this LMA challenge. This photo of a white-tail deer (doe) was taken from a window while a small herd of does grazed in our front yard! This is my grandson, Tanner, throwing what we call a "ground fit". That's when a child gets down on the floor and cries or hits the ground or shows his temper in various other ways! Again, please confine this photo/result to LMA. This was one of a bunch of gigantic sunflowers from two summers ago. I couldn't resist photographing this snail. My camera isn't the best so I was pleased that this came out halfway decent. This was taken off our back porch just as the sun colored the sky in the east & I included it especially for Martina! BTW - it's a sunrise. Had to include this one since we've been discussing sumi-e painting. We'd cut some bamboo sticks (although this is actually river cane, not true bamboo) to use as stakes in the garden & I loved the shadow this made against our well-house. I hope everyone can find something they'd like to draw or paint. I've tried to include a variety of subjects and a difficulty range from relatively simple to the more complex. I did not include a grayscale image for each photo as I didn't know if I'd be able to upload everything - if you want a particular photo in grayscale, just let me know & I'll do my best to get it to you. Enjoy! I'll be lurking about with the whip so you'd better hurry up and choose and get started by tomorrow! lol

Wow Jan, great photos!! At once when I saw the bamboo I thought of sumi-e - and I MUST try this out. What do you think, can I do it with watercolors and a normal brush for wc? And of course I will do the sunrise - sunrise - hm - you are nosy to me, aren't you? Btw - My heart has fallen in love with the little snail!!!! And yes M'am , I just made my choice and will start tomorrow! ;D .

Laura, unfortunately, this is as big as they get. You did click on the small thumbnails, didn't you? As I said, my camera isn't the best so the pics are on the small resolution side. Also, some of them are the same resolution as the others but were cropped and therefore a smaller size.
Glad you like the photos, Martina, and yes, I think you should be able to approximate sumi-e painting with watercolor and a big round brush. I hate the damage snails do to our plants but they are so fascinating to look at, aren't they?
Tim, Tim! Out here on the farm where our biggest crop is the hay, the statement pretty much meant what it said! lol We always use that figure of speech to mean getting something done while you can!
Now, for certain other things that we want to do, we say "making time" or sometimes, "making whoopee"!!! hee hee
And a very Happy Valentines Day to you, too!

Lovely pictures Jan, thanks. I'm sure I'll find some time to squeeze one of these in though it's really very touch and go for the next three weeks or so. My son for instance is breathing down my neck to write some promotional material for his campaign... naturally he leaves it right till the end and then he wants it yesterday! Tim, my darling... do you usually do "the other thing" while the sun shines?.... no wonder your work keeps piling up!! ;D ;D Happy Valentines to all!

9x12 pastel I am pleased with it. Let me know if you have any suggestions. I might do this on larger paper. My printer ink evidently didn't have enough yellow (last time I do a refill) so I had to wing it on the colors. I would really like to make some note cards out of some of my paintings. I guess I will look at Office stores this weekend.

I'm so glad you've participated & don't really have any suggestions except for maybe a bit more variety of color in the leaves and stem. I don't think the photo has it, but maybe the tiniest bit of yellow in some of the leaves would give it a little added punch.
Let us see if you do decide to re-do it larger! I'm sure it will be lovely.

Laura, yes, go darker on the leaves and add some variations of green to give it some "pop". Otherwise, nice job.
You can buy those blank greeting cards at Wal-mart in the hobby/scrapbook section. ;D ;D

I like the gleam you added to the center of the sunflower Lasi.. very pretty. I agree with the others that some variety of greens would add more life to an already very good painting. Well done!

Much better I think. It makes the flower stand out more. How does it look to you in real life?

Good Job Laura!!!! Making it darker helps the picture a lot. If it is lighter in real life than on the computer then you need to get it up to at least this dark. If it is too light, it just fades into the background and sunflowers definitely scream out at you with their bright yellow petals and dark green leaves and dark brown centers. They have very prominent darks, mediums and lights.

Well done, Lasi! I knoow how hard it is to go darker, always the d.... frear to ruin the pic, but you have shown that it is worth to go darker - it makes the flower glow. Here is my bamboo. I started it as a sumi-e, but I didn't like it. So I went on as a wc painting with some CPs for the background. size abour 210x170 mm.

Oh, Martina! You're just growing by leaps and bounds, aren't you?!!!! I really like this & the mixed media seems to be your calling! My only thought is that either the bamboo stem or the background could be darker so that the stem can be seen. The stem and background seem to be very close in both color and value and sort of melt together.
Otherwise, this is a great piece! Very well done!

I actually took my painting outside and it is like the photo.
Tim, painting flowers is new to me. Just about everything is. I enjoy pastels so much. ;D
