Honest guys...................I'm not holding out. I couldn't "get it" with CP's! Then I tried Duralar and I seem to be doing wonders with it.
I believe it is because I can erase it. With paper, I can't erase my mistakes like I can with Duralar. For example, I was having trouble with that sliced lime in the picture. I had to erase it 3 times! Yes, I completely erased it!!!!! What a great product this is!! I can't tell you how much I have learned in just doing these last few projects. I'll never use paper again with CP's.

I haven't taken to drafting film the way some have & I guess it's probably just because cp's don't "stir" me like some media. But you're doing so well with it that I might give it another go!
Could you explain your process?
Do you use a sharp pencil or a duller one?
Do you try to do lots of layers or do you just jump in with the local color?
Do you use both the front and back?
What do you use to erase with?
Any tips you can give us wanna-be's?
If you'll share, I won't lash you! hee hee

Oh my goodness, Jan..................................I am by far NOT all that good at CP's. You are in fact much better than me. And Andrea is just plain outstanding at them. Then we have Rose who does everything brilliantly and now we have Margaret who is also very good at them and Paulette, Miranda, Fito and of course our darling Martina and everyone else that I can't remember them all. I would never consider myself nearly as good as all of you. But I will share my experiences with them on Duralar on these last few pics. I use both sharp and dull points - dull more than sharp except for tiny spots that need sharp detail. I have found that using one side of the pencil without turning it will give me a dull side and a sharp side so I don't have to sharpen it as often. I haven't been doing lots of layers - usually I have found that I can get the color I want with about 3 colors or less sometimes. I also know that Duralar doesn't hold a lot of layers so I have purposely not used very many layers. So far, I have only used the front. I may experiment with the back at a later date. I am using a plastic eraser called "magic rub". I like it alot better than just plain plastic erasers. Also I have been using my white pencil eraser to blend. I have also used a craft knife to scrape away a heavy wax buildup if I get carried away with myself. LOL I do like the look of a burnished painting though. I don't particularly like a picture that isn't burnished for some reason. Tonight I am going to experiment with an electric eraser and blue tack and q-tips to see if I like using them. One very interesting thing that I found was that if I put a piece of watercolor paper under my duralar while working on it, I can achieve a "different" textured look that can be helpful. It sort of looks like it skips over the "valleys" of the paper and leaves these white spots which can be interpreted as a textured finish. Another thing I discovered is that I can get a very smooth coverage by holding my pencil horizontally to the paper and softly applying color. I don't know if this will help anyone but it's my 2 cents worth. LOL Please, Jan..................................I'll add more if I can think of anything..............just so I won't get 30 lashes!!! LOL

Joanie that's a great little write-up you did there. Why not copy it (edited if needs be) in the CP section of the classroom.

Wow, Joanie these are awesome and so realistic. I love the water droplets on the fruit, in fact I love everything about it all! You are a true natural with CP's.

I did it again..............................LOL Here are two pics done in CP on 2 different types of drafting film. The Guatamalan Lady (8x8) is a complete failure..................I did this on a drafting film called Denril - I'm pretty sure I used the wrong side and it is a mess. But I will try this paper again and try to use the correct side the next time. It doesn't say on the tablet if it is 2 sided or one sided or what. The second picture is from Wet Canvas again and I was attracted to it by the bright colors and the fact that the stamps were Polish. (I'm half Polish). I consider this one a success as I am happy with it's outcome. It was done on Duralar and is 8x10 So.....................all in all I learned something this weekend. LOL ;D

The stamps drawing is so crisp and colourful! And it's very attractive to the eye. I know what you mean about the lady though. Have you tried some outlining of the skin areas in a light brown? The dress looks beautiful though!
It's a joy to see you really doing a fantastic job with your coloured pencils!

Joanie, the stamps are just great & the woman is good too. This is why I preach good materials! I bought some of that Denril stuff when I couldn't find the Duralar & it's the pits! I don't think there is a right or wrong side to it and it's so thin that it creases at the drop of a hat. I don't even know how architects/draftsmen use it!
But, all is not lost, it's a multimedia film and you can use w/c pencils as a base on it if you want. That will allow you to use fewer layers of cp. Just use a light layer of any water soluable media before the cp though. Or you can use strictly wet media if you want. Plus, I'm sure you can overcome the limitations of any substrate if you set your mind to it!
I still think your woman is good & it's especially good considering the Denril!

Thanks everyone Jan - thanks for the info on the Denril. I think I'll probably use it for tracing paper now that I know it wasn't me but it was the paper! I doubt that I'll use it again. I just thought it would work when I bought it. Bird - there's no fixing this one. It's too far gone to try to fix.

Joanie your stamp picture is beautiful. I love the colours. Shame about the other picture because it was looking like a very promising portrait. We live and learn as we go along, I'll make sure I don't get that Denril film too, thanks for sharing. You'll have to get some other brand and try that portrait again.

Great job Joanie, you are really churning them out. How big are they and which pencils are you using? Now that you have the hang of the CP's you can try on paper again and see if it's any different. I find some subjects just require more layers than I can achieve on film and so have to revert back to paper.

Thanks everyone. ;D
Andrea - yes, I've been thinking of going back to paper now that I am getting the hang of the pencils. But I'm having so much fun with this I don't want to be disappointed if I fail on paper again. LOL
I've been using prismas on these. I have my derwents right next to me but I don't have as great a color range with them as I do the prismas (I only have a 72 set of derwents).
